Letters to John XXIII

LettersLetters to the Popes

La Pira met Angelo Roncalli (1881-1963) when the latter was Patriarch of Venice (he had been appointed in 1953 after a diplomatic career in Bulgaria, Turkey and France), where they met frequently (“I spent yesterday evening with Prof. La Pira” – he wrote in his diary in 1956 – whom I respect and esteem. This is a soul worthy of every respect“.

Elected Pope in 1958 (“an elderly caretaker Pope” was the prediction of Vatican-watchers of various newspapers…), John XXIII led the Church for five years crucial in its history; five years that La Pira accompanied with frequent letters that the Pope read with interest as his secretary Mons. Capovilla mentions.

The Fondazione Giorgio La Pira published all the letters sent to Pope John XXIII in the volume:

G. La Pira, Il sogno di un tempo nuovo – lettere a Giovanni XXIII, A.Riccardi and A.D’Angelo eds. Milano, Edizioni San Paolo, 2009

We have summarized here the content of four letters:

§ There came a man (1958)
§ The crisis at “Galileo” (1959)
§ Only and always at the service of the Lord (1959)
§ Pilgrim for unity (1960)
