The rooftops of Florence

Even when they attended the inauguration of a painting exhibition, La Pira (who had many friends among the Florentine painters) did not make occasional or courtesy speeches.

There is a short text, taken from an amateur recording, which illustrates what was said here and that also shows how La Pira -not a Florentine- loved and understood Florence "down to his soul":

What is the mystery of the rooftops of Florence? ...

Try to watch look at them, meditating, from Piazzale Michelangelo and San Miniato. Is it true or not that they form, around the two central points of the dome of St. Maria del Fiore and the Tower of the Palazzo Vecchio, a harmoniously combined "whole", almost a system of geometric and architectural proportions that expresses, like the 'star system', order, beauty, prayer, rest and peace?

(...) " O Jerusalem, Jerusalem ...How often I wanted to gather your children together, just as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not have it!” (St. Matthew XXIII, 37).

Brunelleschi's dome and the rooftops organized beneath it is as if under its wings, joining with it!

Was Jerusalem not perhaps the architectural transcription, the 'urban plan' of this divine unity?

And is Florence not, in fact, more refined and more harmoniously built - -the mirror, in a sense, of this "divine archetype"?
