The last letter from Paul VI

To Professor Giorgio La Pira,

Florence

It is with deep emotion that I receive your lines of 22 August, together with those dictated on the 20th. I read there of the less than happy state of your physical health, and I suffer with you and with all those who hold you dear; and I also read of your “wish to follow to the very end the will of the Lord!”, the sorrowful and wonderful drama of the Cross, reserved for those who in their own physical and spiritual experience echo those sublime words of St Paul: "...adimpleo ea, quae desunt passionem Christi in carne mea pro corpore eius, quod est ecclesia".

May the Lord grant relief to this infirmity, and grant you the grace and wisdom to reflect furthermore upon this regenerating passion in the situation “in which thousands of young people find themselves”. Well then, dear Friend. The ever lamented Monsignor Rampolla is assuredly at your side.

May the Lord console you and grant you courage and reward your steadfastness, and in His name I greet and bless you.

PAULUS PP. VI

Castel Gandolfo, 1 September 1977.
